OPITO – Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain Further Training (Twin Fall) – Simulator
The aim of the programme is to give Offshore Lifeboat Coxswains the opportunity to demonstrate their knowledge and skills, and practice certain elements of their role which they cannot reasonably practise offshore.
How is the Course Delivered ?
The course is delivered using our state of the art Lifeboat Simulator. The simulator is DNV GL approved. It provides a fully immersive experience and allows Coxswains the opportunity to practice and demonstrate their skills and competence. Assessment is conducted by trained and experienced assessors.
What is the benefit of using the simulator as opposed to real TEMPSC / lifeboat?
There are multiple benefits to using a simulator as opposed to real TEMPSC / lifeboats.
Training can be conducted at any time, and is not affected by external factors such as weather conditions, sea state, mechanical failure or even insufficient students to run a course.
Launching and recovery of real lifeboats can be a hazardous task and using simulators removes this risk. Simulators can also be adapted to provide challenging conditions within scenarios i.e. low visibility, sea state, engine failure etc. were typically it would not be possible or safe to do this.
Why simulation?
Simulation has been used in training / assessment for many years. It is utilised by the airline industry to train aircraft pilots and assess their ongoing competence. It is used by helicopter pilots to ensure there ongoing competence. The nuclear industry uses simulation as part of ongoing training and competence of personnel. Astronauts use simulation in preparation for space exploration.
Simulation is not a new concept, it is a new approach to training and assessing coxswains in a safe and controlled environment providing realist scenarios that could not be safely practiced during conventional training.
Simulation allows us to push the boundaries in a safe and controlled environment, and provides delegates with conditions that they may be subjected to in a real emergency as a lifeboat coxswain, as opposed to training in a sheltered / ambient environment.
Is this training OPITO approved?
YES. Were delegates meet the pre-requiste requirements, and also meet the stated learning outcomes of the training, delegates will be provided with an OPITO Certificate – Offshore Lifeboat Coxswain Further Training (Twinfall) 5182.

Learning Outcomes
Delegates will have previously demonstrated their knowledge and skills and will have been assessed as competent Offshore Lifeboat Coxswains. During this programme you will be given the opportunity to demonstrate your knowledge and skills as a TEMPSC coxswain in aspects which you cannot reasonably practise offshore.
To successfully complete this Further Training Programme, you must be able to understand:
1. Use of the sea anchor and maintaining the safety of passengers
To successfully complete this Further Training Programme, you must be able to perform:
2. Preparing to Launch and Launching TEMPSC
2.1 Checking external and internal integrity of TEMPSC
2.2 Removal of mechanical restraints to enable launch of the TEMPSC
2.3 Starting the TEMPSC engine using both primary and secondary start systems
2.4 Boarding passengers safely on the TEMPSC
2.5 Confirming the launch area clear
2.6 Brief the crew and obtain permission to launch
2.7 Releasing the Lowering / launching mechanism
2.8 Securing the hatches and turning on the air and water spray protection systems
2.9 Clearing the installation on course for a safe area
3. The Learner will perform:
3.1 Pacing alongside a vessel for transfer of personnel
3.2 Man overboard procedures if any personnel are in the water
3.3 How to tow another vessel
3.4 How to be towed by another vessel
