Safe Overhead Crane Operation

Safe Overhead Crane Operation

Instructor Led – Safe Overhead Crane Operation

The Safe Overhead Crane Operation course is aimed at any person operating, or working with, overhead cranes. The safe operation of an overhead crane requires training and assessment before it can be performed unsupervised as the lifting of heavy objects creates potential hazards to those operating the crane, those working nearby, and pedestrians. The transportation of large loads is always an activity that requires a great deal of care and safety awareness.

Overhead cranes can be used for the movement of shipping containers from vessels on to docks in which case great care must be taken to ensure the load is not dropped and nothing is struck as the load is being moved. Before using an overhead crane, proper training must be undertaken to ensure that an appropriate level of knowledge is possessed by the operator in order to carry out this work safely.

The material covered in the Safe Overhead Crane Operation course is instructor led, including interactive classroom activities.

Course topics and activities include:

  • Pre-use checks: Identifying any potential problems with the overhead crane prior to operation in order to mitigate any risks. This includes the identification of malfunctioning or damaged parts.
  • LOLER and PUWER regulations: These regulations place duties on people and companies who own, operate, or have control over work/lifting equipment. This course explains their relevance and how the legislation affects you.
  • Lifting accessories: Some lifting operations will require additional resources and the overhead crane to be adapted to allow for unfavourable angles. This section will detail additional tools that can be used in tandem with the overhead crane.
  • Operations guide: An overview of the correct way to operate an overhead crane. This includes precisely planning the tasks and the correct lifting procedures.
  • Health and safety: Overhead cranes and other lifting vehicles are involved in a quarter of all workplace transport incidents (www.hse.gov.uk) and because of that, strict safety regulations are in place relating to their operation. This course outlines these with particular focus on the protection of those operating the overhead crane, those working nearby, and pedestrians.
